Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year. I look forward to an awesome year of purpose and commitment to bring quality instruction with a dedicated and devoted staff committed to our students and to the Mission of education.  Ambler Avenue Elementary and High Achieving Gifted Magnet is committed to fostering productive, responsible life-long learners by providing our diverse student body with skills they need to become creative, independent, critical thinkers, collaborative workers, and effective communicators who can make a positive impact in our world.  Ambler’s Vision is to promote a community of learners involving teachers, students and parents who are committed to creating an environment that nurtures and challenges all students to become critical thinkers, who utilize effective communication and social skills to thrive in a culturally diverse and technologically advanced society.

Beginning August 16, 2016, Grades 1-5 will enter through Gate 7, ETK and K will enter through Gate 5 through the Kindergarten Yard. Parents, you may make an appointment to see any teacher in the Main Office at 9:00 a.m. We are building standards, benchmarks, fundamentals, and routines for all of our students. Please help us by being a good role model for the boys and girls by adhering to our schedules and procedures. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.

STUDENT DRESS:

Students are required to wear the school uniform. We have two schools on our campus, therefore we need to be able to distinguish between the two schools. Shoes and clothes should be suitable for participating in all school activities including physical education.  For boys and girls this means navy/or dark bottoms and white or blue polo tops. Girls may also wear navy blue or dark skirts. Open-toe shoes, tennis shoes with wheels (Heelys), jellies or sandals are unsafe and are not allowed. Students’ toes and heels must be covered at all times with closed shoes and socks. When students wear a uniform to school, it fosters a mindset for the business of learning. Parents of students who come to school without a uniform will receive a phone call and will be required to bring a uniform for the student.  We expect that all students will be in uniform by August 24, 2016. 

 

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

It is expected that all students arrive to school on time, and in uniform with homework and supplies, prepared to enter the classroom ready for instruction. It is the student’s responsibility to follow the school rules and teacher directions at all times.  When students are prepared for learning, their academic achievement soars.

 

LUNCH

Remind your students to follow cafeteria rules. Students are to enter the cafeteria quietly. Running, loud talking, pushing, etc. will not be tolerated. Students are to remove all trash from their assigned tables before leaving the lunch area. All lunch is to be eaten in the lunch area. Students are not allowed to take food to the playground.

 

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES:

Students are expected to arrive at school everyday, on time.  Gate 7 opens at 7:45 a.m.  If your child is not in line by 8:05 a.m. for ETK – 5th grades, he/she is late for school.

 

Regular attendance is essential for student academic success. Students who are habitually absent or tardy miss out on the first good teaching that takes place at the very beginning of each morning.  When your child is habitually late he/she misses out on the teaching and modeling of the concepts and lessons that take place during the first 20-30 minutes of the day. Students arriving late receive an abbreviated version of the lessons they have missed. In other words, the teacher tries to teach the late student in 2-3 minutes what he/she has been teaching for the last half hour. If this pattern continues for several days then the child has a weak foundation on which to build due to the gaps in their learning.

 

This problem is multiplied for the student who is habitually absent from school. A student who misses 20 days from school has missed a month of learning. Anywhere from 50 to 60 days will equal a whole semester causing the student to fall further behind the class, due to the limited number of hours of instruction they received.

 

When returning from an absence, the child must present a written note from his/her parent stating the cause of the absence. Children who are absent for more than three days need to go to the office to be re-admitted. Children who have been hospitalized or seen by a doctor need to be re-admitted through the Nurse’s Office.

 

The instructional day consists of approximately 319 minutes. Our students need every one of those minutes to be successful. A parent/administrator conference will be necessary in cases of chronic tardiness and absences. Perfect attendance certificates and trophies are awarded only to students who have no absences or tardies (late) during the school year; and good attendance certificates are awarded to students with less than 3 absences or tardies.  The district connect Ed. System will call, as well as Parent Rep. Staff. 

 

POLICY AND PROCEDURE:

The following dismissal plan will be implemented for the 2016-2017 school year.

  • Parents pick up your students on time. There is no supervision for students after 2:30 p.m.
  • All children who have not been picked up by 2:40 p.m. and are not enrolled in G.A.P. or Youth Services will be escorted to the Late Gate 1.
  • No students shall wait in the office for pick-up.  There is no supervision for these students.  Kindergarten students must be picked up on time. ETK and Kindergarten students located in Main Office Atrium.  If you are late, students will be located on the playground at Ambler Gate 1, Grades 1-5.

    *To ensure the success of our Dismissal Plan, the following procedures must be adhered to:

  • Parents must park their cars, being careful not to block the driveways of our neighbors, get out, and pick up their children.
  • Students should not walk between cars to get to you.
  • Parents may not enter campus through dismissal gates. Parents wishing to see teachers must follow procedures and enter through the main door and get a visitor’s pass and proceed to the office.
  • DO NOT block the driveways of any homes surrounding the school when parking your car or waiting for your child/children. Our neighbors have the right to leave their homes on time for their jobs, doctor’s appointment, etc., and/or be able to enter their driveways when they return home without delays because someone is blocking their driveway. Let’s not be inconsiderate and penalize them because they live near our school. Cars that block the driveway of the neighbors have been and will be ticketed or towed.  The School is not responsible for any tickets accrued.

    Please note:

    Students are not to return to Ambler’s campus after they have been dismissed. Many times after dismissal some students have returned with sodas, chips, and other goods, from the local vendors and left empty cans or bags on school grounds. This is strictly prohibited. It is important to keep a clean campus and healthy students.

     

    BACKPACKS/PERSONAL PROPERTY:

    Please check your child’s backpack each and every morning before they come to school.  Be sure that your child does not bring anything to school other than his/her school supplies.  The Los Angeles Unified School District does not provide insurance for loss of or damage to personal property of students.  School administrators and principals are urged to notify parents and students that there is no insurance coverage and to discourage bringing personal property to school, particularly large sums of money or expensive clothing, jewelry, watches and cell phones.  Valuables should NOT be left in desks.

     

    Please do not allow your children to bring cameras, toys, watches, calculators, electronic games, etc. unless prior written approval is given by the principal.  We cannot assume responsibility for such items.  Please mark your child’s name with a permanent marker on all clothing, lunch pails, backpacks, etc.  We will check labeling on these items periodically to help insure that clothing and personal items are not lost.  There is a Lost and Found area for students to check for lost articles.  See the Parent Center.

     

    NO BIRTHDAY PARTIES

    As per State Educational Code, District Policy, and School Policy set by School Site Council, no birthday parties are to be celebrated during instruction, staff breaks or duty free lunch times. While it is important for families to acknowledge the birthdays at home, it is not the school’s responsibility to allow balloons, cakes, clowns, etc., to distract from the instructional program. Classes are allotted two parties per year- one to coincide with the winter recess and one at the end of the school year. Please refrain from asking teachers to allow parties in class during instructional time.

     

    RELEASE OF STUDENTS:

    As we continue to get office personnel who are new to the school, a PHOTO I.D. MUST BE PRESENTED for students being picked up before the end of the day. NO EXCEPTIONS! Please refrain from asking teachers or other staff members to identify you. They may know who you are, but not know of any custody/restraining orders or other issues or concerns. No child will be allowed to leave school during school hours without official clearance from the office. All parents/guardians must sign children out. District policy is to check the child’s emergency card to verify that the adult is authorized to take the child from school. At no time can students be released to minors. This includes kindergarteners, an adult 18 years and older must pick up Kindergarten students.  Students will not be called to the office to wait for a parent who is picking them up early.  Please pick up students who have scheduled appointments between 1:30 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. NO STUDENTS WILL BE RELEASED BETWEEN 8:30 – 1:30 (except in an emergency).  That is the time that concepts and skills are taught.

     

    CLOSED CAMPUS/SAFETY/SECURITY:

    The morning gate will be closed at 8:05 and will not be reopened until 2:30 for dismissal. Parents must park their cars on the streets. All gates must be locked at the beginning of classes in the morning and remain locked until the end of the school day. Only the main entrance to the school will remain open during the school day and the entrance will be monitored at all times. Make sure you read the signs before parking.  Motor vehicle traffic presents a hazard to our pupils. Drivers must stop on the school side of the street, at the curb dropping off students or picking up children. DO NOT DOUBLE PARK AT ANY TIME. DO NOT PARK IN THE BUS ZONE BETWEEN THE POSTED SIGNS ON BILLINGS DRIVE. DO NOT BLOCK THE DRIVEWAY OF THE NEIGHBORS, ESPECIALLY ON FRIDAYS (8 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Ambler and Billings).  VIOLATORS HAVE BEEN AND WILL BE TICKETED OR TOWED.

     

    VOLUNTEERS:

    The staff at Ambler welcomes parents and community volunteers. When families are meaningfully involved in educational activities their children do better in school. Family participation not only provides additional academic/behavior supports, but also creates community and cultural connections. Any time that you are available you are welcome to come and volunteer daily, weekly, monthly or for special events WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! If you would like to become a volunteer, please pick up an application from the Main Office, and/or see our Parent Representative, Elizabeth May, in Room 31- Parent Center, which is open in the morning at 9:00 a.m.

     

    PASSES FOR CAMPUS VISITORS:

    We are committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students. All campus visitors must have the consent and approval of the principal/designee.  The office opens at 8:00 a.m.

     

    — All parents and other visitors must SIGN-IN at the front DOOR and obtain a

       Visitor’s pass at the Main Office prior to accessing the campus.

    — Children who are not enrolled at the school are not to be on the campus unless

       prior approval of the principal/designee has been obtained.

    — When visiting the classroom, do not converse with the students, teacher and/or 

       Instructional aides during instructional time.

    — Do not interfere with school activities.

    — Keep the length and frequency of the classroom visits reasonable.

    — Follow the school’s established procedures for scheduling an appointment with

       the teacher(s) and/or principal/designee after the classroom visit, if needed.

    — Return the visitor’s permit before leaving the campus. 

     

    SMOKING:

    As per District Policy, smoking is not allowed anywhere on the school grounds (THIS INCLUDES THE PARKING LOT AND IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL).

     

    CHILDREN LEAVING THE CLASSROOM:

    No child may walk the school campus alone. All students must have a pass when he/she is out of the classroom during class time.  When students are sent to the office, they are sent in pairs and should return together.

     

    RESTROOM USE:

    Unless it is an emergency, restroom use is limited to before school, recess, lunch, and after school. Please encourage your child to use the restroom during those times. If your child needs frequent restroom breaks, please send a note to the teacher and school nurse to avoid the embarrassment of wetting their pants in class.

     

    SUSPENSION AND EXPULSION RECOMMENDATIONS - Please refer to the Parent Handbook for Student /School Code of Conduct for further information. 

     

    SUSPENSION/EXPULSION- Students can be suspended for the following:

    — Fighting

    — Excessive tardiness/ongoing defiance

    — Engaging in habitual profanity or vulgarity

    — Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs

    — Vandalism/Graffiti/Theft

    — Bullying, harassment, sexual harassment

    — Truancy

     

    ­Note:  No one can suspend but the Principal/Admin. Designee.

     

    EXPULSION WITH SUSPENSION- Students will be suspended, recommended for expulsion and possibly arrested for the following:

    — Possessing, selling, or furnishing a firearm

    — Possessing and/or brandishing a dangerous object (sharp object)

    — Possession of an explosive (firearm)

    — Selling a controlled substance

    — Committing or attempting to commit a sexual assault or committing a sexual battery

    — Causing or attempting to cause a serious physical injury to others.

    — Robbery, extortion

     

    The following actions will not be tolerated at Ambler Avenue Elementary School and may result in suspension/expulsion: Vandalism, fighting, bullying, threats, defiance and disruption of school activities and theft. Please refer to the Student/School Code of Conduct section in the Parent Student Handbook.  Your child will have to be signed up for counseling immediately to give him/her support as needed.  Someone will call you.

     

    CELL PHONES ON CAMPUS – STUDENTS:

    “No school shall permit the possession or use of any electronic signaling device that operates through transmission in receipt of radio waves, including but not limited to paging signaling equipment, by pupils of the school while the pupils are on campus, while attending school-sponsored activities, or while under supervision and control of school district employees, without prior consent of the principal or his designee.  Students are not allowed to have cell-phones, game-boys, a video recording device, or any other electronic games. Many students abuse the use of cell phones by texting during instructional time. Some have video-tape classmates play-fighting with the intent to upload the video on YouTube. Parents please adhere to the school policy of NO CELL PHONES to avoid any future legal actions. Any electronic items confiscated must be retrieved from the office by an adult.  There will be no investigation of a stolen or lost phone, or any other aforementioned devices.  Do not bring to School!  No exceptions!

     

     

    EMERGENCY FORMS:

    Please take time to carefully complete the emergency forms. Two (2) Student Emergency Information Forms (Emergency form) are sent home to be COMPLETED AND MUST BE RETURNED. One Emergency form is kept by the Nurse and the other form is for the Main Office. Accurate and complete information is extremely important in case your child becomes ill or if there is an emergency. If changes in phone number, work location, etc. occur during the school year, please advise the school.  It is the parents’ responsibility to keep emergency addresses and telephone numbers up to date. We must have two emergency phone numbers and the signed medical authorization on the reverse side of the form. List the names of all adults (over 18 years of age) to whom you wish to release your child. If you send someone to pick-up your child and their name does not appear on the emergency form, your child will not be released to that individual. For students who ride the bus, be sure that the appropriate adult is at home to receive the student when the bus brings them home. 

     

     

     

    BREAKFAST IN THE CLASSROOM (BIC):

    As you are aware, Breakfast is served in the Classroom only. If you choose to serve your breakfast at home, all the food must be eaten at home. Students will not be allowed to bring breakfast food into the school, especially hot food or drinks. Please do not allow your child(ren) to purchase food from the Vendors for breakfast to be eaten at school. Breakfast will be served at 8:05 a.m. Please be on time.

     

    CAFETERIA:

    We are a Provision 2 school for the school year 2016-2017, which requires all students to complete a meal application for this school year. Students who are currently enrolled will receive a lunch application in the mail. Please complete the application and mail it back in the self-addressed stamped envelope. If you misplaced the self-addressed stamped envelope, you can bring the meal application to the main office. Below are the minimum requirements we as a school need to meet to maintain our free lunch status.

                                      

    Every time a breakfast or lunch is picked up, your child must say his/her first and last name (legal/Birth Certificate Name), NO nicknames to the Cafeteria Staff at the counter.  Keep in mind that students simply get in the food line, choose their meal and the Cafeteria staff will touch the screen on their name as they pass through. Please encourage your child to try every fruit or vegetable offered during meal times.  DUE TO STATE AND FEDERAL EDUCATION CODES: ONLY STUDENTS WHO ARE IN REGULAR ATTENDANCE AT AMBLER AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND EMPLOYEES WILL BE PERMITTED IN THE FOOD AREA. Please adhere to this policy to avoid cancellation of the Free Lunch Program for the whole school.

     

    UNHEALTHY SNACK/HEALTHY SNACKS:

    We have identified UNHEALTHY snacks such as: candy of any kind, gum, soda or flaming chips, Takis, Cheetos, doughnuts, and flavored drinks with sugar as the second ingredient listed. These items may not be consumed at school.  All candies, gum, chips etc. will be collected and trashed if brought to school.

     

    We have asked students to MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES FOR SNACKS AND LUNCH such as: Fruit, fruit roll, juice, yogurt, carrots, celery, raisin, pretzel and Sun chips.  We want our students healthier for their future.  We are asking that parents support our efforts to maintain this policy.

     

    LOST AND FOUND:

    Parents are asked to label student jackets, sweaters, back packs and lunch pails with the students’ names.  All coats, sweaters, backpacks, lunch boxes, etc. will be placed in a lost and found box located near the cafeteria by the girls’ restroom. Encourage students to check for lost articles periodically.  Lost money, purses, glasses, etc. should be brought to the office.  These items will be held in the Parent Center.  Items that are not claimed will be donated to a selected charity quarterly.  All items are stored in the ball Box on the yard.

     

    CRUTCHES OR SERIOUS CONDITIONS:

    Any child with a cast, crutches, or any type of support, staples or stitches must be sent to the nurse’s office for evaluation. These students are not allowed on the playground until such items have been removed and accompanied by a physician’s note verifying that the student can return to regular play. Any child who has had a serious illness or injury must be readmitted through the nurse’s office. Any child who takes medication must be sent to the nurse’s office. Teachers will not administer medication or allow children to self medicate or to keep medication in their desks or backpacks, this includes over-the-counter medication such as cough drops, throat lozenges, creams, ointments, lotions, aspirin, etc. If your child is too sick to be at school, please consider keeping the child home for his/her sake and the sake of others.

     

    SAFETY:

    Student safety is the highest priority at Ambler Avenue Elementary School. Parents should NEVER allow students to cross the street in traffic when dropping off or picking up children. Students should be dropped off near the closest corner or crosswalk. Parents and other stakeholders are asked to report hazardous conditions to the office. Practice drills such as fire drills, lockdown drills, and earthquake drills are regularly scheduled throughout the year. Please read all notices, bulletins, and flyers sent home to eliminate undue stress regarding these procedures. Students are not allowed to ride skateboards, skates, scooters, bicycles, or shoes with wheels on campus.  Please do not allow your child to bring these items to school.  The use of these items is strictly prohibited.  It is important for parents to answer the phone as messages will be sent through the connect Ed. System to properly inform you of safety issues as well as school activities.

     

    FIELD TRIPS:

    Parents, it is imperative that you fill out the field trip slip completely in order for your child to attend the trip. The top and bottom of the slip, requires a parent’s signature to be valid. Without a parent signature on both sections of the field trip slip, the student will not be allowed to go on the trip, and will remain at school.

     

    HOMEWORK:

    Teachers will begin giving homework on the first day of school.  Homework is to be assigned Monday through Thursday, and sometimes daily.  Please read to your child daily, and have them read to you.

    MAKING AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE PRINCIPAL:

    The Principal has an open door policy and tries to be available whenever parents drop by. However, the main responsibility of supervising instruction tends to suffer when the Principal is not able to make his daily visits to the classroom as District Policy dictates. If for any reason you need to meet with the Principal, please do not hesitate to contact the Main Office to schedule an appointment face to face or by conference call at 310-532-4090.

     

     

     

    PRINCIPAL’S POLICY:

    Please help your child remember that they are always welcome to talk to me. They are encouraged to share with me any concerns they might have in the classroom or on the playground. Any student can come to see me BEFORE SCHOOL, DURING RECESS/LUNCH RECESS or AFTER SCHOOL.

     

    PARENT INVOLVEMENT:

    The Parent Center is housed in Room 34. I encourage you to visit and meet the parent volunteers who work there, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Consider signing up for our volunteer program so that you too can become an integral part of our learning community.  In addition, your participation in various councils is highly recommended.  These are English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC), and School Site Advisory Committee (SSC). Additionally, throughout the school year various parent activities are available for parents whose working hours prohibit participation during regular school hours, i.e., Back to School Night, AEMP, Literacy Family Night, Math Family Night, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Parent Classes, Parent Programs, assemblies, fundraisers, and festivals. So get involved in at least two activities for this school year. We’ll be expecting you. Due to the budget crisis, we need parents to volunteer to work at the front door during school hours. We are no longer able to fund that position. We also need volunteers to assist during recess and lunch recess.
